Roles on the lot

There's a fit for every volunteer.

Indoor or outdoor, quiet or social, English or Spanish — pick a station when you arrive, or switch as the morning goes.

Sorters

Break down grocery rescue pallets in the warehouse. Indoor, quiet, no guest interaction. Good for first-timers who want to ease in.

Packers

Assemble family boxes from the sorted shelves — rice, beans, pasta, canned goods, bread. The repetitive, satisfying job that fills 250 to 400 boxes by 7 AM.

Greeters & line

Welcome guests at the gate, check photo ID and proof of address, and keep the line moving. Spanish-speaking volunteers especially needed here.

Loaders

Carry boxes from the staging area to open trunks. Lifting required — about 20 to 30 lbs per box. The job that gets everyone home with groceries.

What your morning looks like

Three hours, start to finish.

7:00 — Arrive

Pull into 590 N. 96th Street. Coffee's on. Park anywhere along the back of the lot.

7:15 — Quick huddle

Whoever is leading that day gives a two-minute rundown and points you to a station. That's the whole orientation.

7:30–10:00 — Work the line

Sort, pack, greet, or load. Switch stations as needed. Cars start coming through the gate at 7 sharp.

10:00 — Close the gate

Cars stop coming in. The crew breaks down tables, sweeps the lot, and resets for next Saturday.

10:30 — Done

Drive home, eat lunch. About 1,200 to 1,500 neighbors just got groceries because you showed up.

Drop-in welcome

No application. No interview. Just show up.

Saturdays
7:00 AM – 10:30 AM

No background check for most roles. Court-ordered service hours welcome — we'll sign your paperwork at the end of the morning. Groups, families with older kids, first-timers — just show up. Bringing more than six people? Send us a quick email first so we can stage enough work for everyone.

¿Hablas español? Te necesitamos en la línea.

Muchos vecinos prefieren atención en su idioma, y bilingual volunteers at the gate make a real difference. Llega el sábado a las 7 AM — same place, same time, same welcome.
